The Glenlivet Guardians Chapter Tasting

The Glenlivet Guardians, of which I am a member, held a tasting in Toronto at The Vault at One King West to choose the next Limited Edition Single Malt. For those of you who are Guardians, or follow The Glenlivet, you will know that the Classic, Revival and Exotic were tasted (more information can be found at www.theglenlivet.com) and all were enjoyed but we had to choose one. I chose the Exotic, why? because I felt that it was unique and would be a great limited release compared to the classic which I also loved but personally felt it was as it name suggests “Classic” and is more in line with The Glenlivet profile.

There were also two other standouts for the occasion: the first was that Ian Logan, the Glenlivet Global Ambassador, was in Toronto that week and conducted the tasting and second the night finished off with a sampling of The Glenlivet Alpha (will be released in very, very limited quantities at around $170).

Highland Park Loki

I had the pleasure to taste the new Highland Park Loki, on October 29, 2013, prior to its release in Ontario. The Loki is the second in the Valhalla Collection which was launched successfully with Thor – which has long since sold out. With a limited supply and a price above $250, the Loki will sell out quickly and those that hesitate will miss out on this interesting new flavour profile that has a hint of smoke.

If you are interested in the story behind Loki together with the tasting notes, you can find them on the Highland Park website, highlandpark.co.uk, and while you’re there sign up for their newsletter.

Jura Tasting with Willie Tate

Sept 30 2013, the day after I returned from a week in San Diego was a treat at The Caledonian on College Street in Toronto. The reason, Willie Tate who is Master Distiller & Brand Ambassador for Isle of Jura Single Malt Whiskey was appearing probably for the last time due to his pending retirement. This was my first time meeting the man, although I am familiar with Jura, as well as The Dalmore, Scotch brands. The tasting comprised of the Jura 12, 16, Superstition and the Prophecy and finished with the forthcoming (at least to Ontario through the LCBO) Dalmore King Alexander. The Scotches as usual were quite good, and the Dalmore King Alexander proved to be a treat and will be a good scotch in the $200’s. Willie Tate, had great stories of his many years in the industry and was great in answering questions and signing a bottle and tasting mat for me. Pictures will be posted here soon but can be found at the g2whisky pinterest board. So while I’ll let you know about tastings through my computer, it is best to get off your and get out there to a tasting and meet some new people. HINT: scotches and whiskies taste better with friendly people NOT with people you speak to through keystrokes.
